International Day for Biological Diversity 2025: Harmony with Nature for a Sustainable Future

Each year on May 22,  International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)—a United Nations–sanctioned observance is celebrated. The day is aimed at raising awareness of the critical importance of biodiversity. In 2025, the theme is “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development” emphasizing the need to align our environmental efforts with broader global goals.

Biodiversity is the foundation of life and underpins everything from food and water to climate resilience and health. Yet, this essential diversity is under serious threat from habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and unsustainable practices. The decline of biodiversity poses one of the greatest challenges to planetary health.

This year’s IDB campaign draws attention to the deep interconnection between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). These two landmark global agendas must be pursued in unison to ensure a livable, equitable future.

By focusing on these connections, the 2025 campaign calls for integrated solutions that promote sustainability while protecting the natural systems that support life. This aligns with the spirit of the recently adopted Pact for the Future, which encourages collective global action for both people and planet.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres powerfully stated:

Biodiversity loss is a global challenge. No one country, however rich or powerful, can address it alone. Nor can they live without the rich biodiversity that defines our planet. As we pursue sustainable development, we must transform how we produce and consume, and how we value nature, and deliver on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework – the world’s blueprint to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. We need policies, regulations, and other incentives to support sustainable livelihoods and build strong, green economies.

The International Day for Biological Diversity is call to action, a day to reflect on how our lives are intertwined with nature, and to renew our commitment to protecting the incredible diversity of life on Earth.
